Overview of the different levels of Six Sigma Certification

Six Sigma certification program comes in several layers for certification, starting from the White Belt level and ending at the Master Black belt level, the topmost layer of the Pyramid. Paragraphs underneath shall discuss about each layer of certification.
Six Sigma Champion
This is the elementary level in the certification program and these professionals possess the understanding of the fundamentals of this management program. However, these professionals will not hold the quantitative abilities to take active part in the projects. Following are the key responsibilities of the professionals at this layer:
  • Identification of the project on dashboard of the company
  • Produce and discuss the objectives of the projects with the core management
  • Selecting a Black Belt/Gree Belt professional as project lead
  • Eliminate all the barriers and constraints that can hamper the swing of the project.
  • Acting as a communication channel between the top management and the project teams.
  • Reviewing the timetable of the project
  • Keeping the team aligned with the overall objective of the project
  • Ensuring the utilization of the Six Sigma methodologies and tools
Six Sigma Green Belt
These are the professionals that participate in the project on a part-time basis, either as the project lead or as the member of a team, handling intricate projects. Following are the key roles and responsibilities of these professionals:
  • Refining the project charter
  • Reviewing Project charter
  • Selecting the members of the project teams
  • Communicating between the professionals in the higher and lower tiers
  • Scheduling team meetings as well as coordination of logistics
  • Data Analysis, throughout the project
  • Training team members about the methodologies and tools


To become a Yello Belt, professionals are required to pass the certification for Green Belt, however, they are yet to complete a project.

Black Belt professionals happens to be the agents of change and torchbearer for improvements, however, they may not be the masters of the process, they are pursuing. Following are the key attributes for these professionals:
  • Holds innovation, managerial as well as technical skills
  • Should be passionate about Systems and Statistical Theory
  • Understands the tools and methods for process improvements
  • Should be a team player and should be able to handle meetings
  • Need to possess excellent communication skills and have proficiency in the language of the client.
  • Should be customer-centric

The Browen Belts are the professional with Green Belt certification, having passed the evaluation for Back Belt certification, however, he/she would take time to complete the project.
Professionals with Master black belt certification shoulders the roles of leaders as the custodians of the certification process, guide to the business managers and executives as well as leverage their expertise to the projects, being led by green belt or black belt professionals.
Responsibilities of the Master Black belt professionals
  • Identification and prioritization of the prime areas in the project, in line with the strategic plans
  • Counsel business managers and senior executives on the fundamentals of Six Sigma
  •  Coordination of Six Sigma Projects from company dashboards
  • Coach and guide green belt and black belt professionals about theory, methodologies and tools of Sig Sigma.
