On a broader basis Six Sigma and Project management both refers to almost same job that is performed at higher level. However, when you go into the details of them these are two different terms altogether and there is lot of difference between both the terminologies.

Project Management established Project Management Body of Knowledge commonly called as PMBOK which is widely used across many industries around the world as it is an accepted standard.
Both, Project Management and Six Sigma work towards same goal of reducing failures, preventing defects, managing risk and controlling costs and schedules.

The differences between the Project Management and Six Sigma

  • Project Management achieve these goals by implementing best practices on a project-by-project basis whereas, in Six Sigma it follows an entire cycle called DMAIC which is Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and control across all units in the organization. Six Sigma is not another Project Management initiative but it is a process in itself works on Continuous improvement strategy by giving appropriate result.
  • In organizations too many Project management has failed because they were not able to measure the effectiveness of methodologies by process changes. On the other hand in contrary Six Sigma provides structured data driven methodologies with various tools and techniques which organizations can use to measure and compare the values before and after applying it to projects.
  • In case of standard Project Management techniques, you can approach them individually and implement them as you learn. But, in Six Sigma it allows the managers to take the project to a different level of commitment and discipline with which project is handled and it not only involves everyone working under it but also tries to meet the expected result or to deliver more than what is expected.
  • There are many challenges for project managers on a daily basis like data gathering and analysis of it, problem solving, understanding the process and evaluate it as required, tracking measurements in standardized manner and so on. So, Six Sigma provides with all these tools which can be used to resolve these issues of Project Management as it works for all the models unlike Project Management which varies from project to project.
  • The precision of Six Sigma is completely different from that of a traditional Project Management. In typical Project Management the organizations go into projects without evaluating the financial risks. But Six Sigma has strong control phase (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) which defines the process, identifies what is the exact issue of the project, performs specific measurements, and depending on the scenario it provides appropriate solution for the task.


So, it can be said that Six Sigma is a robust continuous improvement strategy which consists of important tools like Total Quality Management (TQM), Statistic Process Control (SPC) and other important tools which when used correctly it will take the organization towards cultural and organizational development.
